Our warmest congratulations to the Alice Yard team (shown above in this order: Christopher Cozier, Kriston Chen, Shannon Alonzo, Nicholas Laughlin, and Sean Leonard) for twenty years of hosting artists, art projects and exhibitions, conversations, performances, and so many varied events. The team opens its doors to celebrate “Marking 20 years” on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, from 6:00pm, at Granderson Lab, 24 Erthig Road, Belmont, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
As Documenta 15 describes:
Alice Yard is a contemporary art collective which, since 2006, has organized and hosted numerous artists’ projects and exhibitions, performances, conversations, and other events, developing an ethos of self-determination, self-sufficiency, generosity, and playfulness. Their work is inspired by Trinidad’s tradition of communal urban yard spaces and mas camps – workshops where Carnival bands create their costumes. They also run a residency program that brings artists, curators, and others to Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
Alice Yard is administered and curated by architect Sean Leonard, artist Christopher Cozier, writer and editor Nicholas Laughlin, [interdisciplinary artist Shannon Alonzo], and designer Kriston Chen, with the support of an evolving network of collaborators, headquartered at their Granderson Lab space in the Port of Spain neighborhood of Belmont.

Dear friends and others,
Sometimes twenty years feels like a very long time, and sometimes it feels like we’re just getting started. What were we thinking? It’s not easy to remember exactly. On 15 September 2006, when we first welcomed people into a space called Alice Yard, we probably had more questions than intentions. We were interested in possibilities, not obligations. We were curious about who would join us in conversation, in imagining, in making.
Over the past twenty years, we have made many new friends and drifted away from others. We still feel curious. Often we’re indecisive, and that can sometimes actually be a useful thing. Often it’s exciting to think about all the things we, and others, have done in and around this space. It’s hard to make it all fit into one picture, one equation. That can be a useful thing also. We never had any end in sight. We’re still asking questions about the possibilities, and the possible meanings of, play, friendship, generosity, autonomy.
On Tuesday 15 September 2026, from 6 pm, we’ll be reflecting on the 20th anniversary of Alice Yard, and sharing some of the objects, actions, and ideas that artists and others have made in conversation with us. Come and join us at our base, Granderson Lab, 24 Erthig Road, Belmont, for a chat, a drink, some music, and to help us remember how we got here, and imagine where we’re heading. (Sorry for the short notice, but as always we move at the speed of our own energy. Also as always, all are invited.)
