The Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA) has extended the application deadline for the inaugural ISLAA Publication Grant, a new annual program supporting the publication and circulation of significant original scholarship on modern and contemporary art from Latin America and its diasporas. The new submission date is September 22, 2026, at 11:59pm (ET).
For the 2026 cycle, ISLAA will make available a total of USD 150,000 in grant funding, with awards of up to USD 25,000 per project. The program supports scholarly books, monographs, exhibition catalogues, and publications resulting from original archival research.
Scholarly exhibition catalogues featuring substantial new research on Latin American artists, exhibitions, movements, archives, or subjects are a particular focus of the program.
The grant is intended to support projects at an advanced stage of development, helping bring important research into publication while strengthening its circulation and accessibility across academic, museum, and public contexts.
Who May Apply? Applications are welcome from individual scholars, curators, and independent researchers, as well as museums, universities, research centers, archives, nonprofit publishers, and other nonprofit cultural or academic institutions worldwide.
Individual and group applicants must have a confirmed publisher or eligible institutional partner at the time of application.
Project Stage— Projects must be at a very advanced stage, with:
- a complete or nearly complete manuscript;
- a final or near-final table of contents;
- a full sample chapter;
- confirmation from the publisher or institutional partner;
- a detailed budget;
- a publication timeline.
The grant supports publication, rather than preliminary research or the initial development of a manuscript.
Selection— Applications will be reviewed by an independent external jury comprising Lauren Cornell, Artistic Director of the Hessel Museum of Art at CCS Bard; Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro, Artistic Director of the Museo Universidad de Navarra; and artist Luis Camnitzer. Agustín Díez Fischer will serve as ISLAA’s non-voting observer.
The jury will evaluate each project based on its scholarly and editorial strength, originality, readiness for publication, proposed publishing and distribution strategy, and potential to make a lasting contribution to the field.
