[Mind blown!] Scherezade García’s majestic, large-scale work, “The Liquid Highway,” is now at its new home at The People’s Theatre: Centro Cultural Inmigrante (located at 419 West 206th Street, New York, New York). The Liquid Highway (Scherezade García): The sea that vast and seductive blue liquid road, a passage, a frontier, and a way out. It carries stories of freedom, slavery, survival, and migration. It carries our DNA, our memories, and our histories, connecting places and people across time.

The sea is both the liquid highway and the keeper of our ancestral memory. This work is inspired by the crossing of the Atlantic, the first European settlement in the Caribbean, on the island of Hispaniola, now Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the exploration of the continental land, and the Dutch settlement in New York. Here, New York becomes a destination: a place where histories, cultures, and peoples converge. I feel as if we have the world within a city, connected by a sea that connects us all.

With The Liquid Highway, I evoke the universal connections that bind us and the fluidity of our identities and lives. The highway is never still ; it is constantly moving, carrying stories forward while transforming them along the way.

The gold dots suggest infinity and timelessness. Like moon dust, they evoke the search for a better life, for opportunity, freedom, and fortune. They become traces of those who crossed, those who arrived, and those whose stories continue to travel through us.

Scherezade García is a painter, printmaker, and installation artist whose work often explores allegories of history, migration, collective and ancestral memory, and cultural colonization and politics. A co-founder of the Dominican York Proyecto GRÁFICA, she holds an AAS from Altos de Chavón School of Design, a BFA from Parsons School of Design | The New School, and an MFA from The City College of New York, CUNY. García has been featured in solo and duo exhibitions at the Art Museum of the Americas, Clifford Art Gallery at Colgate University, Miller Theater at Columbia University, Lehman College Art Gallery, Crossroads Gallery at the University of Notre Dame, Museo de Arte de Santo Domingo and others. She has participated in the Havana Biennial, the International Biennial of Paintings at Haute de Cagnes, the IV Caribbean Biennial, Trienal Poli/Gráfica de San Juan, Latin American Biennial, BRIC Biennial, Venice Autonomous Biennial, and international fairs. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Art Museum of the Americas, El Museo del Barrio, The Housatonic Museum of Art, El Museo de Arte Moderno in Santo Domingo, and others.

García is the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant (2015) and the Colene Brown Art Prize (2020). An edited monograph on her work Scherezade García: From This Side of the Atlantic, was published in 2020 by the Art Museum of the Americas. She is a member of the Artist Advisory Council of Arts Connection and No Longer Empty. She sits on the Board of Directors of the College Art Association (2020-2024).

The People’s Theatre: Centro Cultural Inmigrante— at 419 West 206th Street—[welcomes] all New Yorkers while amplifying the voices of the City’s diverse immigrant communities and cultivating work by local artists and arts organizations.

[. . .] Audiences will experience theatrical performances that center and explore the breadth of immigrant experiences represented in New York City, enjoy live music, and dance performances, film screenings, and other civic and community events. For children and families, the center will offer classes, festivals, and student matinees field trips.

The People’s Theatre will also partner with the New York Public Library (NYPL) on programming, research, and community engagement initiatives that amplify the cultural and educational impact of both organizations. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to serving the community, fostering public dialogue, and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Northern Manhattan.
