WJournal shares: Puerto Rican filmmaker Michelle Malley Campos’ Extranjera connected with local audiences during its presentation at the 2026 Puerto Rico Film Festival, ahead of the film’s theatrical release across Puerto Rico on September 10.

The film was screened on August 21 in Mayagüez as part of the festival’s official selection. Both screenings sold out, making Extranjera the only film at the festival to have two sold-out premiere screenings, according to the production team. Audience reactions were described as positive and emotional.

Extranjera follows Epa, a young Puerto Rican woman who leaves the island after a scandal involving her father. She travels to reconnect with her mother, from whom she has been estranged for years. The journey forces Epa to confront her family history as well as questions about her own identity.

“Presenting Extranjera in Puerto Rico, after its journey through international festivals, was a deeply meaningful moment,” Malley Campos, who wrote and directed the film, said. “This film was born from an intimate experience, but it speaks to universal questions about identity, belonging, personal responsibility and finding our own voice.”

The film was shot in Puerto Rico and Taiwan and takes audiences from San Juan to Taipei through its cinematography and soundtrack, reflecting both Epa’s physical journey and her personal search for identity.

The Puerto Rico Film Festival screening is part of Extranjera’s international festival run, which has included events in Spain, Argentina, Mexico and Russia. Its festival appearances include the Ourense Film Festival, the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, the Mérida and Yucatán International Film Festival, the Girona Film Festival, the Moscow International Film Festival, the Tucumán Latin American Film Festival and the Semana de Cine de Lugo.

As part of that international run, Extranjera received the FEISAL Jury Award at the 27th Ícaro Festival. The award, presented by the Federation of Latin American Schools of Image and Sound, recognized the film for its artistic and narrative value. [. . .]
