Group Exhibition by 6 International Artists in Residence: “SILA / DEMSELF / AGBETEGBÉE / EFTERLIV” (St. Croix)

“Reparative Encounters: 6 International Artists in Residence on St. Croix USVI” refers to an artist collective hosted by the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts (CMCArts). Dorothy Amenuke and Bernard Akoi-Jackson (Ghana), La Vaughn Belle (USVI), Julie Edel Hardenberg (Greenland), Katrine Dirckinck-Holmfeld, and Daniela Agostinho (Denmark/Portugal) will be in residence at CMCArts from November 1 to 24, 2026. CMCArts will open the artists-in-residence exhibition, SILA / DEMSELF / AGBETEGBÉE / EFTERLIV, on November 21, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00pm. The exhibition will run through January 9, 2027. The exhibition is expected to travel to Denmark, Ghana, Kalaallit Nunaat and the Faroe Islands.

The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts is pleased to present the group exhibition SILA / DEMSELF / AGBETEGBÉE / EFTERLIV, the most expansive showcase to date of the artist group Reparative Encounters. Reparative Encounters is a network of artists and curators from the U.S. Virgin Islands, Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), Ghana and Denmark, all locations differently impacted by Danish colonialism.

Central to the work of the network is the idea that colonialism separates and alienates, creating ruptures that remain to be repaired. By working alongside each other, the network foregrounds artistic collaboration and solidarity between these regions as key to repairing colonial separation. Since 2023, the group has been working collaboratively to create encounters: public conversations, workshops, film screenings, performances and exhibitions in Nuuk, St. Croix, USVI, Ghana and Denmark. All of which now culminate in this exhibition at the invitation of CMCArts.

The Exhibition: SILA/DEMSELF/AGBETEGBÉE/EFTERLIV | November 21 2026 – January 9, 2027

The exhibition title combines the words SILA (Inuit concept denoting the physical world and its climate, and a spiritual wisdom of living in that climate); DEMSELF (the reflexive form of dey, the third-person singular personal pronoun in creole languages, signifying the plurality of being); AGBETEGBÉE (in Ewe language suggests eternal life); and EFTERLIV (in Danish refers to the afterlife but also echo of a past event). Exploring the intimate connections between histories, cosmologies and spaces, the exhibition will offer entryways into the distinctiveness of each artistic practice while opening up lines of dialogue between them.

Featuring video works, textile installations, fabric sculptures, collage and performance work, the exhibition will present existing works created during previous encounters, as well as new works which will be produced for the show, including site work during a 3-week residency at CMCArts.

An exhibition catalog will be published, and the exhibition is expected to travel to Denmark, Ghana, Kalaallit Nunaat and the Faroe Islands. This exhibition is made possible through the generous support of Nordic Culture Fund, Carlsberg Foundation, Ny Carlsberg Foundation, Danish Arts Foundation and Aarhus University.
