Martinique’s film director Euzhan Palcy received the Unita Blackwell Award last Wednesday during the 35th annual convention of the NCBM or National Conference of Black Mayors in the United States. According to Vanessa L Williams, executive director of the NCBM, the trophy, which bears the name Unita Blackwell, the 1st woman to have chaired the association from 1990 to 1992, is meant to reward the inspiration Palcy’s work has brought to her audiences throughout her entire career.

In addition to the mayors, others attending the conference included leaders from Africa and its diaspora, such as Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, Prime Minister of Haiti Michelle Pierre Louis, Colombia’s Minister of Culture Paula Moreno Zapata, US Attorney General Eric Holder, as well as Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Barbara Lee.
