Belize’s 1st prime minister, George Price, dies

Belize’s founding father and first prime minister has died at the age of 92.

Grand nephew Henry Charles Usher says former Prime Minister George Price died early Monday at the Belize Healthcare Partners Hospital in Belize City.

Price led the tiny Central American country to its independence from Britain on Sept. 21, 1981.

He served two terms as prime minister from 1981-84 and 1989-1993 is considered the father of the Caribbean country of about 300,000 that borders Mexico and Guatemala.

Price had been hospitalized since Wednesday after suffering a fall at his Belize City home. He was in a medically induced coma following surgery to remove a blood clot.
