Omar Velázquez’s exhibition, MORRIÑA, will be introduced with an open house event on Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 10:00am to 5:30pm, at MADMi [Museo de Arte y Diseño de Miramar], located at 607 Calle Cuevillas, Miramar, Puerto Rico. MADMi invites the public to their cocktail reception (sponsored in part by Plaza Cellars and Walter Otero Gallery), from 2:00 until 5:00pm. See their description below. [“Morriña” has several meanings, ranging from nostalgia, homesickness, melancholy, and longing, to the drowsiness or heaviness one may feel before or after a nap.]
Description (MADMi): We invite you to an Open House to celebrate the opening of the exhibition MORRIÑA by Puerto Rican visual artist Omar Velázquez. This exhibition brings together around twenty works in which the artist captures a sense of nostalgia for his surroundings through striking techniques. His paintings are distinguished by their “three-dimensional” appearance, while his exceptional animal sculptures reveal an incisive humor that invites the viewer to look closely and decipher their many layers of meaning.
Omar Velázquez: Born in Isabela, Omar Velázquez is an artist and musician whose practice interweaves painting, printmaking, sculpture, music, and the visual traditions of Puerto Rico.
Velázquez earned a bachelor’s degree with a concentration in printmaking from the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, and later completed a master’s degree in painting and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His early works explored themes related to urban life and social marginalization, while his more recent practice turns its focus toward the island’s rural landscape, folklore, music, memory, and the lingering effects of colonialism.
Through vibrant colors, unexpected imagery, and surreal compositions, Velázquez develops a visual language that is deeply personal, yet also closely tied to the cultural and political realities of Puerto Rico.
