New Book: “Breviarios”

Breviarios, by Juan Carlos Quiñones, is a new edition that includes his 2002 award-winning Breviario (previously published by Isla Negra, and recipient of the Premio Pen Club de Puerto Rico), and his 2026 Nuevo Breviario, published by Editorial blanco & Staccato.

Fellow Puerto Rican author Pedro Cabiya writes: “One of the book’s primary gravitational centers is the island. But not the postcard-perfect island, nor the island as a tourist destination, nor even the island understood solely as a geographical territory. In these pages, the island is an ontological condition: a place of transit and confinement, of origin and escape, a coastline and a prison, a cemetery and a laboratory, a threatened memory and a machine for generating ghosts. The island emerges as a boundless prison — a space where stories are erased only to return in distorted forms, where lives can be exchanged, appropriated, forged, or submerged beneath the surface. In this sense, Quiñones’s writing partakes in a profoundly Caribbean imagination: it recognizes that, on islands, history is never still, never fully written, and never entirely belongs to those who claim to possess it.”
