[Many thanks to Peter Jordens for bringing this item and all related links to our attention.] Dominica News Online (18 September 2026) reports that Dominican filmmaker Farrah La Ronde-Hutchison received international recognition for her directorial debut, Women of Dominica, which was named Best International Documentary at the Urban Film Festival in Miami.
Gaia’s Essence announced the achievement in a September 16, 2026, press release, stating that the award was presented during the festival’s 11th annual celebration.
A press release from the company stated that the 64-minute documentary, which was also nominated for Best Feature Documentary, tells the stories of 10 intergenerational Dominican women and explores mentorship, matriarchal wisdom and cultural pride.
Through interviews, observational footage and imagery of Dominica, the film examines the role of women in preserving cultural identity and helping shape the future of their communities.
“Winning Best International Documentary at Urban Film Festival validates the six-year journey of bringing these women’s stories to life,” said Farrah La Ronde-Hutchison, Director and Environmental Scientist. “This award isn’t just for the film, it’s for Dominica and the ten extraordinary Dominican women whose voices, resilience, and cultural legacy deserve to be celebrated and preserved. To have our work honored alongside such talented filmmakers at UFF has been an emotional moment and one I will never forget.”
[. . .] “Women of Dominica” has also been selected for festival screenings in Toronto through ScreenShare/CaribbeanTales International Film Festival and in Trinidad & Tobago through the Caribbean Film Festival. The release stated that additional international festival appearances are in development.
The documentary is continuing its international festival tour, taking stories from Dominica and the wider Caribbean to audiences in different parts of the world.
