Editora Educación Emergente presents the book launch for De huelga a pandemia en Puerto Rico: una década de intervenciones periodísticas internacionales (EEE, 2024) by Maritza Stanchich, with translations by Zinnia M. Cintrón Marrero. [Warmest congratulations on the new book, Maritza!]
Today, March 4, at 4:30pm (AST), Sandra Rodríguez Cotto will introduce the book in the Jorge Enjuto Amphitheater (Sala A) at the School of Humanities at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras (UPR-RP). [The amphitheater is located on the first floor of the Luis Pales Matos building, near the Theater and snack machines.]
Book Description (Translation of a description by Melanie Pérez Ortiz, UPR-RP): In the midst of the turbulence of civil action to retain or rescue what is ours, we know that we can count on the support of the columns that Maritza Stanchich writes for the U.S. press. When neoliberal impoverishment strategies promoted by local leaders follow scripts established by the U.S. government, it is necessary for the cry to reach the ears of those who pull the strings, largely with a gross ignorance of the specific realities and complexities of the archipelago they shamelessly colonize. With twenty-five years of respectful and supportive residence in Puerto Rico, Stanchich has always been one of ours.
As good journalists do, these columns speak with data to refute the commonplaces and assumptions from which the metropolis reads us. Written in the midst of the major controversies that we have suffered and enjoyed in recent years (because we, Puerto Ricans, protest by dancing and playing tambourines and hand drums), Stanchich’s articles remind us that we have a coherent, dignified, intelligent, tenacious history of struggle, which has won battles and does not surrender.
