As part of its Conferencias Caribeñas 14 lecture series, the Institute of Caribbean Studies of the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras (UPR-RP), invites the academic community and the general public to the lecture “El proyecto trujillista antihaitiano en los informes de Instrucción Pública 1930-1940” [Trujillo’s Anti-Haitian Project in Public Education Reports 1930-1940] by Dr. Elissa L. Lister (Department of Philosophical and Culture Studies, Universidad Nacional de Colombia-Medellín). Dr. Eduardo Aponte (Social Foundations of Education Program; UNESCO Chair in Higher Education, UPR-RP) will comment the lecture.  

This activity will take place on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, from 1:00 to 3:30pm at the Manuel Maldonado Denis Amphitheatre (CRA 108) of the Carmen Rivera de Alvarado Building, School of Social Sciences, UPR-RP.

Description: It is commonplace to say that the 1937 genocide of Haitians was due to a sudden and impulsive order by dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina, that only members of the Dictatorship were responsible for this, and that it occurred in the span of a few weeks, or, more specifically, a few days of October of that year. Research on documents, such as reports written by teachers in border schools and inspectors of the National Public Education Service, which are housed in the General Archive of the Nation in Santo Domingo, allows us to analyze the ideological and discursive changes taking place as part of an anti-Haitian plan, which started at the very moment of dictator Rafael L. Trujillo’s arrival to power.
