Puerto Rican junior tennis player Monica Puig reached the final of the prestigious Grand Slam tournament with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 victory over number two seed Russian Irina Khrobacheva.
With an impressive 61 percent first serve conversion, 17-year-old Puig was able to take control of rallies in the match, despite her loss of the middle set. Puig played a very attacking game and kept the pressure up on her opponent by coming close to the net. She also used her drop shot to great effect fooling the challenger on a number of occasions. She will take on 9nth seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia in the final to be played on Sunday.
Monica was the runner up at the 2011 Australian Open Junior Championship. She is expected to turn pro after this season.
Congratulations to Monica, my best wishes for the final. WE….THE PEOPLE OF PUERTO RICO ARE VERY PROUD OF HER SUCCESS.
