The Agriculture Department of Nevis has scheduled a special sale of agricultural items on Market Street in Charlestown today in commemoration of World Food Day, an international event sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The theme of this year’s World Food Day is “Achieving Food Security in Times of Crisis.” World Food Day, October 16th, is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and informed, year-around action to alleviate hunger.
Items on sale will include locally produced meat and meat products, fruits, vegetables and agro processed products. A variety of seafood will also be on sale. The Department will also take the opportunity to present four awards for contributions to the local agriculture industry in the fields of crop production, livestock production, fishing and agro processing. The ceremony, which begins at 10:00 a.m. will also include the launch of a backyard garden competition in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism. The competition will be judged during Tourism Week in February 2010.
