Theater/Performance: Eduardo Alegría’s “Esquina periferia”

Puerto Rican actor and musician Eduardo Alegría has recently completed his new production “Esquina periferia” [Periphery Corner], which has been brought to the stage this month by El Taller de Otra Cosa experimental dance/performance troupe). “Esquina periferia” premiered this weekend, May 13-16, 2011, and will be performed again next weekend, May 20-22, at Teatro Coribantes. The theater is located at 2 Nemesio Canales Street at the corner of Ponce de León Avenue (in the parking area of the Instituto de Banca) in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico.

“Esquina periferia” has been described as “a spectacle of theater-performance and music for our times.” Eduardo Alegría, who is best known as founding member of the group Superaquello [see previous post Superaquello Launches “Escuchate Esta E.P.”], has his roots in theatre and dance; therefore, “Esquina periferia” may be considered as his return to the stage. The cast includes artists such as actress Teresa Hernández; choreographer and founder of El Taller de Otra Cosa, Viveca Vázquez; actress Isel Rodríguez, from the cast of this season’s Teatro Breve; actor Yamil Collazo; and musician Harry Rag.
