With Ruth Padel out of the Oxford Professorhip of Poetry and the recriminations game losing steam, the one remaining question of any importance—whether Derek Walcott would put his name forward again when nominations are opened for a new election—was answered today in the negative. Walcott has said he would not stand for election again as he did not want to revisit “that awful business.”

“I don’t think I’ll stand again,” he added intriguingly, leaving the slightest opening for reconsideration.
