Exhibition: “Miradero II”

With works by Laura Castro, Cassandra Mayela, Charlie Quezada, Pablo Santiago Romera, René Sandin & Melissa Raymond, and Awilda Sterling Duprey, MIRADERO II opens at Km (El Kilómetro, located at 802 Roberto H. Todd Avenue, San Juan, Puerto Rico) on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 6:00pm.

Description (with translated excerpts by Karlo Andrei Ibarra, 2026): ElKilómetro is pleased to present the second exhibition edition of Miradero. This exhibition revisits abstraction through its relationship with the Caribbean context, where the abstract does not imply a departure from reality, but rather a way of processing the visual load that surrounds us. Faced with an environment constantly shaped by images, architecture, infrastructure, bodies, objects, colors, and transformations, the act of abstracting entails selecting, reducing, encoding, fragmenting, and reconstructing what is observed.

“From this perspective, the environment is not merely a subject or reference point; it plays an active role in the production of the work. Landscape can transform into color, architecture into form, infrastructure into code, the body into gesture, and the passage of time into corrosion and material transformation.

A miradero [overlook, viewing structure] is a structure built to observe a territory. Its function involves selecting and framing a portion of the landscape within a much larger field of vision. Miradero II proposes a similar operation: faced with the accumulation of stimuli that make up our daily experience, these artists isolate fragments of reality and return them transformed.

Rather than defining a Caribbean abstraction, the exhibition proposes different ways of looking from the Caribbean standpoint. Abstraction thus appears not as an absence of reality, but as a way of processing it. Perhaps we should climb this vantage point as soon as possible and observe from its multiple perspectives, before the tide rises.”
