Mickaël Bé Caruge’s “Rêve diurne” opened yesterday (Friday, May 15) at Fondation Clément (Habitation Clément, Le François, Martinique), where it will remain on view until July 5, 2026.
Description: Mickaël Bé Caruge’s exhibition highlights a pictorial practice that has progressively developed a symbolic dimension, giving a central place to drawing and meaningful objects. His work is characterized by a wide variety of techniques and styles, as well as a recurring presence of the body and self-portraiture. Using color, which has become descriptive, and expressive motifs, the artist offers a personal interpretation of the world, situated between observation, memory, and imagination.
The artist explains: “Dreaming, according to an accepted definition, is ‘letting one’s thoughts and imagination wander.’ The act of dreaming is enriched with meaning by its Latin origin, the word ‘vagus,’ which means ‘one who wanders.’ However, in painting, our potentially unrealizable projections are paradoxically the ‘salt of the earth,’ the artist’s liberal utopia. For the field of painting, this theme flourishes. Through poetic visual creations, this rich and widely explored theme allows for the construction of spaces and representations that reveal the interlacing, the lines, all the contours of the imagination. This is what triggers our sensitivity, even on a collective scale, but for painting, it becomes a way to unleash possibilities. Painting, which will always exist through its sensitive, sensual contribution, is a psychological tool for the painter and can become a fountain of youth for the viewer. There is no need for authority, power struggles, or money in painting when it becomes magic, intuition, blossoming. It can calm minds; it can heal souls.” [. . .]
