1st International Festival of Creole Literature

EUSsXkFRMK

The First International Festival of Creole Literature will take place in Haiti, from December 4 through 18, 2019.

The event will focus on Haitian Creole as well as Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, just to name a few, with the backdrop of two historical days for the language in Haiti.

Two symbolic dates are selected for the event. December 4; in 2014 this was the date of the installation of the first members of the Haitian Creole Academy and December 18; in 1965, this was the date of the creation of “Sosyete Koukouy”, one of the oldest cultural movements in Haiti promoting the Creole language.

At this first edition of the festival, Hilario Batista Félix will represent Cuba as the guest of honor at the event. Félix, who heads “Bannzil Kreyòl” in Cuba is also one of the promoters of Haitian Creole in that country.

“This is an initiative that aims to highlight, exclusively, the Creole literary production, not only the Haitian Creole but also that of Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica to name only those” according to Anivince Jean- Baptiste, an author and one of the initiating members of the festival.
