[Many thanks to Roselina Rivera for bringing this item to our attention.] Having recently experienced the devastation caused by Hurricane María, Puerto Ricans have been particularly moved by the present devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. Here is a translation of “Econo y Fondos Unidos forman alianza para llevar ayuda a las Bahamas” (Villalba Online), which describes how the Econo supermarket chain has joined forces with United Funds to raise funds for the Bahamas. Villalba Online reports:
Econo Supermarkets announced today its initiative with United Funds to bring much needed help to the islands of the Bahamas, recently devastated by Hurricane Dorian.
Under the name of “Uno X Uno por Bahamas,” the public will have the opportunity to multiply aid for victims of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. For each dollar received as a donation in the Econo Supermarkets, an additional dollar will be provided, up to a maximum of $50,000 for the aid fund for those affected by the hurricane.
“Our program of positive gestures is present in all our actions. We now have to help our brothers and sisters in the Bahamas through the generosity of our people,” said Eduardo Marxuach, president and chief executive officer of Econo Supermarkets. “The Board of Directors, our shareholders and all of us who work at Econo want to make this an important effort to help the Bahamas in what has been a major disaster. Together we will be able to extend a hand in solidarity and alleviate to some extent the impact of this unprecedented atmospheric event.”
