Former President Jimmy Carter Visits St. Croix

Former President Jimmy Carter and his family spent their holiday vacation this year in Christiansted, St. Croix. Carter agreed to hold a press conference just before the island’s Old Year’s Night festivities got under way, during which he spoke about his love for St. Croix, his family, and ongoing humanitarian work and writing projects.

Carter spoke about the process of finishing his 26th book (based on excerpts from his diaries while he was in the White House), his volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity, and about global projects of the Carter Center, which he and his wife founded in 1982. He also discussed this year’s political and environmental conditions, stating that he was glad 2009 was over and that “next year is going to be a better year for peace, for justice, for human rights and for the environment.”

Among other activities, the Carter family snorkeled at Buck Island, visited the rain forest, toured the Cruzan Rum Distillery, and attended the Christmas Festival Food Fair in Frederiksted where they enjoyed the local cuisine and the cordiality of the Cruzans.
