Susumba reports that dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson will offer a Performance Poetry Workshop at the University of the West Indies-Mona on January 25, 2016, from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Tanya Batson-Savage writes:

Linton Kwesi Johnson is one of the legends of dub poetry in particular and Caribbean performance poetry in general. The pioneering reggae poet will be sharing some of his insights about performance poetry at a workshop hosted by the Department of Literatures in English, at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

Johnson, whose accomplishments include being the second living poet to be included in the Penguin Modern Classics series with his collection, Mi Revalueshanary Fren: Selected Poems, is noted for seminal pieces such as ‘Inglan is a Bitch’, ‘If I Woz a Tap-Natch Poet’ and ‘Reggae Fi Dadda’.

In 2014 Johnson’s ‘Hurricane Blues’ was listed among the ‘50 greatest love poems of the last 50 years’ by the South Bank Centre. The list, which also featured Derek Walcott and Kei Miller, included poets from over 30 countries across the globe.

Johnson has produced several poetry collections and albums. His first collection Voices of the Living and the Dead appeared in 1974 while his seminal sophomore collection Dread Beat an’ Blood was published in 1975. His other collections and albums include Bass Culture (1980), Tings and Time (1991) and More Time (1998). [. . .]
