Happy Easter!

The Bird-of-Paradise (of the genus Strelitzia, and related to the banana) traveled to the Caribbean from the African continent. With this flower, Repeating Islands wishes all of you a Happy Easter!

  1. Another plant that traveled from Africa to the Caribbean Islands is Kalanchoe daegremontiana bryophyllum, otherwise known as the Thousand Daughter Plant. TDP is unique in that it produces vitamin A three times better than carrots: more easily digestable, less soil, much less water. Vitamin A deficiency is the underlying cause of the high mortality rates for women and children whose immune systems are greatly weakened by insufficient vitamin A.
Narayan “discovered” this plant in Sweden, but it is native only to Madagascar. However, two days after his first arrival in Haiti, December 15th, 2010, the plant was found high up in the mountains of Ranquitte at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Father Andre Augustin granted suitable acreage to do intensive propagations of the plant so that every Haitian mother may grow enough vitamin A for herself and her children. Thus, Haiti could possibly become the first nation to achieve the targets of death reduction for the Millennium Development Goals #4 and #5 before the target date of 2015.
Also, please note that thus August will be the 500th anniversary of the Catholic Church in Hispaniola.
