Jorge Díaz-Torres Wins the Miami 2010 PULSE Prize

Pulse Miami’s sixth edition took place December 2-5, 2010, at The Ice Palace at 1400 North Miami Avenue. Pulse Contemporary Art Fair Director Cornell DeWitt announced that Jorge Díaz-Torres, represented by San Juan, Puerto Rico’s RICA Gallery, is winner of the Miami 2010 PULSE Prize. He will receive a $2,500 cash grant and the opportunity to design the limited-edition VIP bag distributed at the fair next year. Díaz-Torres is known for his ceramic and papier-mâché sculptures of realistic objects with dramatic surrealist distortions, three of which were on view in RICA Gallery’s booth.

The PULSE Prize is awarded to outstanding artists selected from the IMPULSE Section, which exhibits solo artists selected by DeWitt and the PULSE Gallery Selection Committee.

Other finalists included Ángel Núñez Pombo of Galería Bacelos and collective Three from Megumi Ogita Gallery. Díaz-Torres joins previous PULSE Prize winners Okay Mountain, Eric Beltz, Chen Chien-Jen, Philip Gurey, Chris Natrop, Emilio Chapela Perez, Duke Riley, and Travis Somerville.
