“Celebrating Windrush, Challenging Myths” is a one-day series of events—including film, music, conversation, and poetry with Nairobi Thompson—to celebrate the achievements of the Windrush Generation and their contributions to British culture and society. This celebration takes place on Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 11:45am to 1:45pm (GST) in Bewick Hall, at the Newcastle City Library (33 New Bridge Street West Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8AX, United Kingdom). The event is free and open to the public, but you must register to attend (see Eventbrite).
Description: ‘Celebrating Windrush, Challenging Myths’ is being hosted by the MARGINALITIES research group for racial equity and justice in arts and design (School of Design, Arts and Creative Industries at Northumbria University), in collaboration with the North of England Refugee Service (NERS), the North East of England African and Caribbean Association (NEEA&CA), and supported by Show Racism the Red Card. The afternoon aims to celebrate the achievements of the Windrush Generation and their important contributions to British culture and society, to understand the Windrush scandal and the processes of compensation. We will also hear personal stories from asylum seekers and
refugees and their experiences of navigating the immigration system.
All of this will be done through film, song, talk and poetry and we are really pleased that our featured artist will be the fabulous Nairobi Thompson, who is a BBC Regional poet and currently poet in residence for both the Windrush Foundation and the Equiano Society.
The event is free, but you should register to attend at Eventbrite: “Celebrating Windrush, Challenging Myths” Tickets, Sat, Jun 14, 2025 at 12:00 PM.
