Book Description (by the author, Carmen Centeno Añeses): The essays in this book revolve around Puerto Rican literature; they were written considering its thematic and aesthetic heterogeneity, as well as the need to value the work of literary criticism in the archipelago that comprises Puerto Rico.

Literary criticism expands the understanding of a country’s culture and, like history, is also a field of debate as part of its cultural and symbolic capital, as well as its interpretive linguistic heritage in this area of ​​the Caribbean, where syncretism and elements of mixed-race identity prevail —those “pieles sospechosas” [suspicious skins] that Luis Rafael Sánchez has explored. [“Pieles sospechosas” is a reference to the title of Sánchez’s latest book, Piel sospechosa (Seix Barral, 2025).]
