Recently, I started reading Francisco Font Acevedo’s Hologramas de desaparición (blanco & Staccato, 2026) and I am thrilled to report that it is a delightful (while often heart wrenching) read. I am exploring its first “holograms” (Chapter 1) with a mix of excitement and trepidation. The text is accompanied the always eloquent and suggestive photographic work by Eduardo Lalo, which Julio Ramos insightfully and aptly describes as “a scattered archive of shadows and reverie” (see description below). This book will certainly not leave me indifferent; but will it leave me unscathed?
Here is a translated description; read the original at Librería Laberinto.
Description: Under the reign of artificial intelligence, not even the spirits of the ancient underworld may rest in safety, protected from machines of projection and extreme virtualization. Attuned to the alteration and disappearance of bodies within a dystopian, intimate, and unrecognizable city, Francisco Font Acevedo returns to San Juan with this singular narrative that expands the horizons of speculative fiction in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. While in La belleza bruta and La troupe Samsonite — books that have already achieved the status of classics —Font explored the material and spiritual urban abandonment wrought by the collapse of grand narratives of progress and modernity, in Hologramas de desaparición, the cult author chronicles a more radical form of orphanhood, one where a disembodied, dematerialized experience inhabits the ontological abyss of the image. It is no coincidence that this book— which marks the launch of the publishing imprint blanco & Staccato— includes a series of photographs by Eduardo Lalo, a scattered archive of shadows and reverie. In Font’s narrative, every click of the shutter from a peripatetic, wandering camera sets in motion the holograms drifting in and out of the frame— ghosts or traces of a sensory and affective bond that is as intense as it is irrevocable.
