IKEA May Be Heading to San Juan, Puerto Rico

According to Caribbean Business, Spanish-language newspapers are reporting Swedish furnishing store IKEA is looking to open a store in Puerto Rico.

Though the Swedish company previously considered a store on the U.S. island territory, it ultimately decided to set up shop in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

However, it appears the company is rethinking Puerto Rico, and is said to be in talks with the island’s Economic Development & Commerce Department regarding operations in San Juan.

The Stockholm-based company currently employs roughly 131,000 people in287 stores in 41 countries. Last year, IKEA saw 655 million customers worldwide.

The company cut prices by 2.6 percent last year, but still managed to see a net profit increase of 10.3 percent ($3.81 billion) with a 6.9 revenue increase for the year ending August 31.

Reports indicate a Puerto Rican IKEA store could begin operations by the end on 2012.

    1. omgosh…it’s horrible. We got there and noticed a line…ok. well maybe because it’s the grand opening. we stood on line outside 25 before we were let in. Once i was in, I realized that the reason there was a line, was because of the size of the store. it’s smaller than you usual wawa coffee shop. everytime i looked around the bend, expecting to see a doorway that led to another room, it was only a glass and mirror trick to make the store look big. this was it! everything you see there, you CANNOT purchase. you can order it. they take your money then they send you an email when it’s in. so far something i bought my mom, has taken 3 and still no mirrors. when one of the orders came in, my mom still spent 2.5 hours there, just trying to get it pulled from the back warehouse. they have no good pulling system…you would think this is a 3rd world country that still lived in the ice age. I swear that it’s not, but this domincan and spanish franchise are treating us like we do not deserve any better. my hope is that it falls, and someone with a good franchise come to P.R. and show then the great store that Ikea is over here in the states.

  2. and I forgot to mention, that we spent over $300.00 in that evening. One of the employees mentioned that the guy from spain and the dominican treated the employees from P.R. very poorly. As if they don’t know any better. The puertorican employees are very well informed and they were very very curtious. If it was not for that alone, we would have walked out. so far 3 weeks gone by and only 1/2 the order came in. and their guidelines state if you do not pick up your order when it comes in, they will cancel it. My mom kept insisting, that these orders should come in all together, since it’s a 45 minute drive to Bayamon, just to pick up a $30.00 item, while the rest of the items are on back order…You should say they are on back order up front, but as per the cashiers, they would be coming in a few days. This is awful business. and by the way, they took the money quickly from my account, but still no product.

  3. WAIT…one more thing. They have items of $6.00, $10.00, etc. but if you don’t spend at least $25.00 they cannot have it shipped to the store unless you pay $25.00 for shipping. so they are not responsible for the merchandise to get to the store unless you pay for the shipping. so if I buy a set of flatwear for $15.00, I would then need to pay an extra $25.00 for shipping. So you are obligated to purchase upto $25.00 if you want free shipping. it’s like they are running a catalogue company out of the store. WTH!
