In Barbados, the University of the West Indies-Cave Hill presented the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence to five elite scholars: professor Maureen Samms-Vaughan (Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health, UWI-Mona), professor Clive Landis (Chronic Disease Research Centre, Cave Hill), Dr. Kusha Haraksingh (Department of History, Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI-Cave Hill), Dr. Dave Chadee (Department of Life Science, UWI-Cave Hill) and professor John Agard (Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Agriculture, UWI-St Augustine).
The scholars, selected from a group of approximately 60 leading academics through what was described as “an intense and rigorous” selection process, were chosen based on four major core areas: outstanding teaching, outstanding research, outstanding services to the university community, and outstanding contribution to public service.
During his reply on behalf of the awardees, Professor Landis said their “towering achievement” stood as testimony that the University had succeeded in influencing policy and public life regionally. He added that the university should do more to help “translate ideas into action and turn intellectual property into products.”
