Exhibition: “Previous-Postrer” (1994-2024) Paris-Santo Domingo

Renowned Dominican artist José García Cordero, based between Paris and Cabarete, presents his new and unpublished solo show, “Previous-Postrer” (1994-2024) Paris-Santo Domingo, to open at Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery (located at the Piantini Tower, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) next Thursday, May 23, from 7:00 to 10:00pm.

Description: Previous-Postrer gathers fifteen works in different formats (oval, rectangular, and circular) produced in acrylic on linen, which consists of a body of work with erotic content, where hallucinatory landscapes and interiors coexist and where the artist displays his well-known provocative imprint of the senses and optical play. Although the landscape is the protagonist, what is evident is a sensual language mimicked on an organic level in its unique universes.

Recently, José García Cordero received the 2023 National Visual Arts Award, the highest award granted to an artist by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic, in recognition of his career and his significant contributions to Dominican culture. Likewise, he has been awarded the Medal of Artistic Merit from the French Senate in 2012.

The artist has just had a successful solo show represented by the Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery at ARCOmadrid 2024 where his work deeply attracted the attention of curators and museum institutions in Spain; he was also part of the collective section curated by Sarah Hermann and Carla Acevedo-Yates, entitled The shore, the tide, the current: an Oceanic Caribbean. Currently, his work is exhibited in El Tiempo de Todavía: Apuntes desde las artes visuales del Caribe, a group exhibition presented at El Centro León and curated by Sarah Hermann.
