Forthcoming: “Paisajes del subsuelo”

Paisajes del subsuelo: Mapas y pliegues de las culturas del petróleo en la Venezuela del siglo XX [which may be roughly translated as Subsurface Landscapes: Maps and Layers of Oil Cultures in 20th Century Venezuela], edited by Manuel Silva-Ferrer (Berlin, Germany) will be published by De GruyterBrill in 2026. The essays included explore topics including extractivism, petroculture, petromodernity, and events that positioned Venezuela as an “oil nation” in the Caribbean basin.

Description: [The essays in]Paisajes del subsuelo tell a story intertwined between nature and culture, framed in what is now known as environmental humanities or energy humanities. This exploration of the constellations that positioned Venezuela as a paradigmatic “oil nation” illuminates like no other the contradictions associated with oil extraction as a fundamental source of energy for modern life on our planet.
