Here’s “food for thought” (or thoughts of food) for the end of the weekend. [Many thanks to Peter Jordens for bringing this item to our attention.] Laura DeMarco (The Plain Dealer) writes about Empanadas Latin Street Food—which brings Puerto Rican flavor to Parma, Ohio.

Alberto Quinones always wanted to own a restaurant.

This Saturday, his culinary dream will come to fruition. Alberto and his wife, Jennifer Quinones, will open Empanadas Latin Street Food at 5543 Ridge Road, Parma.

The cheerful orange-and-silver café will feature a variety of empanadas from Puerto Rico, where Alberto grew up and where Jennifer’s family has roots. “There really aren’t any Hispanic restaurants in this area,” says Jennifer Quinones. “We’ll be focusing on Puerto Rican flavors. We’ll have the classic emapandas everyone knows about, beef, chicken and pork, plus many other ones.”

“I love to cook,” says Alberto, “and I want to bring Puerto Rican flavor to the area.”

Their wide-ranging menu includes breakfast, sweet, veggie and seafood emapandas. Flavors include pizza, pastrami, egg and cheese, broccoli and cheddar, steak, mac-and-cheese, crab, Nutella and strawberry and guava and cheese. Alberto is especially proud of the meatlovers empanada, with pork, beef stew and chicken stew. They will also be serving Latin sodas such as Malta, mofongo on Sundays, pasteles and other Puerto Rican favorites. Sides include rice, beans and plantains. See https://www.facebook.com/empanadaslatinstreetfood for their full menu.

Prices are $2 to $3 per empanada. There are 16 seats in the bright, airy space, though the owners expect most of their business will be take-out.

The opening is timed to coincide with the Polish Village Treat & Greet , 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, in which they will be participating. They will open at 10 a.m. Saturday. “It’s a way to introduce ourselves to the neighborhood,” says Jennifer Quinones, who also owns the T-shirt shop next door, Cleveland Custom Tees, with Alberto.

Empanadas Latin Street Food will be open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. after Saturday. They will begin serving their breakfast empanadas next week. For more info: https://www.facebook.com/empanadaslatinstreetfood
