White Urchin Season Opens in Martinique

France Antilles-Martinique announced the beginning of fishing season for the traditional white sea urchin [oursin blanc]. White sea urchin fishing is regulated in Martinique in order to preserve this emblematic Caribbean species from overfishing.

The season will be open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday between October 21 and November 1, and December 16 and 17, from 6:00am until noon.

Only registered professional fishing vessels from Martinique are allowed to fish the white urchins. “Fishing is practiced only through diving from a vessel whose minimum size is two and maximum of three. A crew member stays on the ship to ensure the nautical watch and surface surveillance of divers,” said the prefecture.

Controls in effect

Areas prohibited to fishing are specified in the decree of October 14, 2016 on the regulation of fishing for white urchins on the coast of Martinique, which is published on the website of the prefecture. Like every year, controls will be conducted by the state departments responsible for policing of fisheries to fight poaching and to ensure the safety for all.
