The Eduardo León Jimenes Cultural Center [Centro Cultural Eduardo León Jimenes] in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, will render tribute to the life and work of Dominican-born designer Oscar de la Renta through the exhibition “Ser Oscar de la Renta” [Being Oscar de la Renta]. The exhibition, which opens to the public on Friday, November 22, 2019, will present “the influential work of this citizen of the world in international fashion, as well as his hidden human dimension.”
The information was provided in a press conference headed by María Amalia León de Jorge, general director of the Eduardo León Jimenes Foundation and the León Center, who offered details about this exhibition, which will open to the public on Friday, November 22, 2019 and will be on view until May 2020, at the León Center, in Santiago de los Caballeros.
In making public the details of the exhibition project, the director of Centro León defined it as one of the most important initiatives of this cultural institution, destined to pay tribute to “a Dominican figure in the world. The great Oscar de la Renta”.
María Amalia León de Jorge reminded the audience that one of the purposes of the León Center is “to highlight those personalities who, due to their trajectory and commitment, have transcended our borders, such as the designer Oscar de la Renta, whose professional career influenced the international world of fashion, marking his future with prestige, distinction and elegance. The León Center has enthusiastically decided to organize a tribute in his own land, in the form of an exhibition that will cover different facets of his life and artistic work,” she said.
For the first time, thanks to this exhibition, the public will be able to learn about the human dimension of this prominent designer. “This will be the first time his work is studied and exhibited from an viewpoint that transcends design and focuses on his humanity in an integral manner,” said María Amalia León de Jorge.
Oscar de la Renta’s richness as an artist and creator, always influenced by his Dominican and Caribbean nature, as well as the nobility, empathy, and social sensitivity of this Dominican icon who connected his essence with the most exquisite aspirations of Europe or the United States, and whose career evolved in the most relevant scenarios in the world, can be perceived in a tour of five areas full of sensory proposals.
“The exhibition project Ser Oscar de la Renta is concretized through a contemporary museography based on the experience of the León Center and on contributions from specialists of recognized international trajectory, which combines different facets of his life and work with original pieces, articulating a discourse that invites the viewer to live a full sensory and intellectual experience. It will be structured in 5 areas: 1) A creator consecrated and celebrated by the world; 2) Oscar before Oscar de La Renta; 3) In the workshop everything is inspiration; 4) I’m just an island boy: Oscar is transnational; and 5) Essences of a legacy: Being Oscar de La Renta,” said the director of the León Center.
