Position: Chief Curator, National Art Gallery of the Bahamas

Job Description: The Chief Curator is part of the leadership team of the NAGB and plays a key supporting role in guiding the direction of the institution and being a role model for the growing team.  The Chief Curator is responsible for the continued selection, presentation, care and scholarly interpretation of the National Collection for the public and for the development and execution of a varied exhibition schedule for the NAGB. He or she will have a clear vision for the NAGB’s exhibition programming—with supporting activities—and for how the National Collection and Bahamian art is researched, documented and interpreted. The Chief Curator is a museum professional who has demonstrated excellence in curation and is capable of budget planning, grant writing and all aspects regarding the financial side of creating, implementing and installing an exhibition. A managerial position, the Chief Curator is also expected to appropriately manage all departmental staff and actively engage in the implementation of the strategic plan.

Reports to: Executive Director; Hours: Full Time, 40+ hours per week

Duties include: Planning and coordinating the NAGB’s exhibition programme and researching, directing and coordinating exhibition activities; producing and installing world-class exhibitions; supervising and producing exhibition publications; assisting the Executive Director in administering museum activities and budget planning; assisting the Executive Director in securing funding or sponsorship for exhibitions and gifts for the collection; coordinating and planning traveling exhibitions; soliciting & securing international exhibition opportunities for Bahamian art; advising on the selection and acquisition of works for the National Collection to the Acquisitions Committee; overseeing the cataloguing and care of the current National Collection and any new acquisitions, according to established methods and practices; overseeing the research and writing of the history and descriptions of Collection items to properly illustrate, display and catalogue items; overseeing the maintenance of the collections database; developing and implementing a conservation program to preserve the National Collection;  analyzing and recommending institutional needs to the Executive Director; in consultation with the Executive Director, reviewing and revising the NAGB’s Collection, Exhibition and Lending policies of every three years, as well as managing the enforcement of these policies; supervising and training staff in curatorial practices and assisting with career planning; supervising the documentation, packing and shipping of all objects being placed on loan to other institutions or being returned to lenders; reviewing financial information to project needs and prepare budgets for Executive Director’s approval; participating in the creation and implementation of a strategic plan.

Must have proven knowledge of: National and regional artists and art histories in relation to international art histories and market trends; Current international trends, exhibitions and markets so as to advise on direction for contemporary Bahamian artists; Museum policies, practices, and procedures; Cataloguing software for museums; Contemporary exhibition design and fabrication methods; understanding of scale, balance, proportion, and colour; Knowledge or familiarity with architecture, graphic and building design; Knowledge of materials and basic conservation of objects.

Additional required experience includes the ability to: Attract new audiences and audience participation; Perform accessing and cataloguing activities of museum materials; Maintain records, prepare reports, and conduct correspondence; Edit materials and articulate exhibit concepts and designs; Research and write on a very high level; Effectively communicate verbally; Think creatively and in an innovative manner; Be resourceful and flexible; Work with both artists and prospective donors; Work long hours, including some nights and weekends for openings and special projects; Travel when necessary; Work on a ladder and lift artwork if necessary; Work well with others in a small environment; Supervise and evaluate the performance of workers; Develop long and short-term goals within the context of a larger plan, and simultaneously work to see them all achieved; Transform complex ideas into forms that are not only understood by the general public, but work to move the conversation on Bahamian and global art histories and contemporary practices forward.

Requirements: The applicant must have the equivalent of a Master’s Degree or Ph.D. These can be from areas such as Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Museum Studies, Art History, Contemporary Art, and Curatorial Studies; five to seven years of experience working in an art gallery, museum or related environment, with a portion of those years in a leadership role. The applicant must display excellent organizational, planning and administrative abilities with outstanding verbal and written communication skills; engagement in the NAGB’s mandate and readiness to work unfavourable hours; creativity, and flexibility. The applicant must possess a strong work ethic, attention to detail, good organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and meet deadlines.

Salary: $50 – $58k (depending on experience); Vacation: Four weeks per year; Benefits: Fifteen percent contractual gratuity in lieu of formal pension and health benefits.
