Caraïbisch Uitzicht announced that Curaçaoan director and actor Raymi Sambo is organizing a special theater event about Zwarte Piet [Black Pete] on Wednesday, April 10, 2019. With his initiative, the actor explains that he “does not want to minimize the emotions surrounding this caricature, but rather wants to place it in a broader context.”
The show takes place at De Melkweg in Amsterdam. Together with Sambo, nine other artists present diverse and sometimes surprising visions, personal experiences, historical perspective and mockery about Zwarte Piet from the perspective of their own disciplines and backgrounds.
Also, as Het Parool reports, “With his company Raymi Sambo Mambo has been making taboo-breaking interactive theater performances on delicate themes for many years. For this he won the Spotlight award during the Black Achievement Month and the Winq Diversity Prize.”
