Ismael Cruz Córdova’s shout-out to Taller Salud

How refreshing! I was surprised to see our very own Ismael Cruz Córdova (from Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico) not for gracing the pages of the March 2019 Vanity Fair, but for providing a shout-out to a leading women’s health organization in Puerto Rico, Taller Salud. Here are excerpts from Britt Hennemuth’s “Rebels with a Cause” (Vanity Fair) followed by a description of Taller Salud. [And here’s my own shout-out to Taller Salud’s executive director Tania Rosario Méndez!]

“I came from a poor community and a highly illiterate family. You know that whole thing where a fish doesn’t know it’s in water? I didn’t realize that we were voiceless until I started becoming more curious. I try to make the roles that I pick count by shedding some light on some sort of community.”

Salud es…
We believe that health is a non-negotiable human right. We define health as a state of balance that every person establishes within him/herself and his/her environment. In this sense, we recognize the importance of a comprehensive health care that considers physical, emotional and spiritual aspects, nonetheless we also advocate for environmental health, the guarantee of a violence free life and the development of prosperous communities that offer opportunities and resources for all.

We recognize that when women prosper, their communities become stronger. And this is why we are convinced that the wellbeing of the people begins with their women’s health.
