The 22nd edition of the Santo Domingo International Book Fair—from April 26 to May 5—will be dedicated to the late Dominican writer Virgilio Díaz Grullón (1934-2001). Puerto Rico is the guest country for the 2019. This year, it will be held at Fortaleza de Santo Domingo (Ozama) and Plaza España in colonial Santo Domingo. Here is a translation of an EFE article, posted in El Nuevo Diario.
The Dominican Ministry of Culture (MINC) reported on Wednesday that Puerto Rico will be the guest country of the XXII edition of the Santo Domingo International Book Fair (FILDS2018) [sic], which will take place from April 26 to May 5 and will be dedicated to the late writer Virgilio Díaz Grullón.
The Ministry delivered the information in a statement in which it announced the opening of registration to this event while addressing writers and national and international speakers.
Furthermore, the statement by Minister of Culture Eduardo Selman addressed local and foreign publishers, bookstores, universities, foundations, academics, librarians, companies, and government institutions with projects, programs or initiatives for publication, book development, and to encourage reading.
The Santo Domingo Book Fair will be held this year at the Fortaleza de Santo Domingo (Ozama) and Plaza España of the Colonial City, because its traditional headquarters, Plaza de la Cultura, is in the middle of a reconstruction process.
This year, it is dedicated to the late writer, poet, attorney, and National Literature Prize winner Virgilio Díaz Grullón, considered as one of the best exponents of Dominican literature.
His first story—entitled “Un día cualquiera”—which won the National Short Story Award, was published in 1958.
His works also include “Crónicas del Altocerro,” “Más allá del espejo,” and “Los algarrobos también sueñan,” which highlights the role of youth during the tyrannical reign of Dominican [dictator] Rafael Leónidas Trujillo (1930-1961). He also wrote “Antinostalgia de una era,” an account of his experience during the regime.
