Tired of waiting for the government to repair a pothole, residents of a Havana neighborhood decided to take advantage of the dirt and grow vegetables, which are in short supply in markets.

So residents of Narciso López Avenue in the Capri neighborhood of the Arroyo Naranjo municipality planted a pumpkin in the pothole.

A photo of the odd initiative was posted on social networks by Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, one of the five Cuban spies once jailed in U.S. prisons. The last three imprisoned were freed by President Barack Obama as part of his decision to normalize U.S. relations with Cuba.

He was sentenced to two life terms for spying and conspiracy to murder the four Miami-based Brothers to the Rescue pilots shot down by Cuban warplanes in 1996. He is now a deputy in the National Assembly and has been awarded the Hero of the Republic medal.

Hernández posted the photo on his Facebook page and praised the Narciso López neighbors who gave “a social purpose to the infamous pothole.”

One person dies in traffic accidents in Cuba every 12 hours, according to official figures. The last report from road and traffic authorities showed that 700 people were killed in 11,187 accidents in 2017.
