Pitzer College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of French and Spanish starting in Fall 2019.
We are looking for a colleague with a strong teaching record in both cultural studies and language teaching, with research connecting the Francophone and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, and wide expertise in communities of African descent in the Americas.
The successful candidate will be a member of the Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (MLLC) field group and will collaborate with colleagues in other field groups to develop courses to strengthen Latin American Studies across the curriculum. Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level, as well as experience and interest in teaching language at all proficiency levels.
Candidates’ profiles should reflect humanities and/or social science perspectives on issues of contemporary relevance to Latin American Studies, and interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and scholarship. Native or near-native proficiency in French and Spanish is required. Evidence of promise in scholarship and a PhD in French, Spanish, or a related field is required. Pitzer College has developed a nationally recognized community-based language learning approach that strengthens ties with neighboring communities, virtual communities, and study abroad sites. Thus, candidates with a teaching and research record and interests in the intersection of language, community engagement, study abroad experiences, and global/local issues offer a desired asset.
In addition to maintaining an active research agenda, the successful candidate‘s
responsibilities in teaching, curriculum, and program development will include:
• Teaching a total of five courses per year as needed, both lower-division French and Spanish language courses, and upper-division courses in the area of Latin American and Caribbean Studies taught in French and/or Spanish;
• Developing a standards-based communicative French language curriculum in close collaboration with the intercollegiate French program and contributing to the existing Spanish language and culture curriculum;
• Participating in curricular design, development of pedagogical materials, professional development in proficiency-based language pedagogy and assessment;
• Designing an integrated virtual community-based curricular component for French language students; and
• Taking an active role in student advising and serving in college governance.
Collaboration is highly recommended with the Chicana/o Latina/o Transnational Studies field group, the Gender and Feminist Studies program and the intercollegiate departments of Africana Studies and Latin American Studies.
The successful candidate may establish affiliations with one of several Intercollegiate Departments (Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chican@/Latin@ Studies) and/or the Intercollegiate Feminist Center for Teaching, Research and Engagement.
