She Paradise, directed by Maya Cozier (Trinidad and Tobago), is a short film about a teenage girl whose world gets turned upside down when she meets a crew of Soca backup dancers. She struggles to fit into the crew. Although she does not succeed at first, the crew presents her with an opportunity for friendship and escape. Her first chance on stage becomes a night of difficult choices but also possibilities for an exciting new future.
The production team successfully wrapped production in Trinidad and Tobago and is now seeking support to fund post-production and festival submissions. The director writes:
I left the Caribbean to attend film school in NY when I was 19. Now that I’ve returned home, I’m driven to tell stories that explore women’s experiences from the region. My last short film, Short Drop, screened at over 20 film festivals internationally and has won awards at Curaçao film festival, Trinidad and Tobago Film festival and the New York Women in Film award at the Dustys (SVA). I want to continue to contribute to Trinidad’s burgeoning film industry by telling stories that feature strong female leads. https://www.mayacozier.com/
