Thousands of men and women, wearing bright colors and glimmering sequins, some with colorful flags wrapped around their shoulders, celebrated Caribbean-American culture with a parade through the streets of Boston Saturday.

The parade draws upon traditions from across the Caribbean and is meant to bring people together, said Deborah Hicks, 57, as she watched the 45th annual Boston Carnival approach the corner of Warren Street and Blue Hill Avenue Saturday afternoon.

“This is our heritage,” Hicks said. “The message of the parade is union — that’s what it’s supposed to stand for.”
