Small Axe 56 (July 2018) is now available. The stunning cover art features a detail from Dominican artist Scherezade García’s “Memories Afloat,” part of the visual essay included in the issue.
This issue includes an excerpt of Angie Cruz’s forthcoming novel, Dominicana; “The Passion of Peter Abrahams,” a preface by David Scott; and essays by Kate Perillo (“The Science-Fictional Caribbean: Technological Futurity in Nalo Hopkinson’s Midnight Robber and Beyond”), and Minkah Makalani (“The Politically Unimaginable in Black Marxist Thought”), and Tao Leigh Goffe (“Albums of Inclusion: The Photographic Poetics of Caribbean Chinese Visual Kinship”).
Small Axe 56 features a special section titled, “Contemporary Dominican Gender and Sexualities Studies,” guest-edited by Maja Horn, with essays by Elizabeth Manley, Sharina Maillo-Pozo, Ana-Maurine Lara, Danny Méndez, Rachel Afi Quinn, Dixa Ramírez, Carlos Ulises Decena, and Fátima Portorreal.
In 2017, the Small Axe Literary Competition was run in Spanish for the first time, and this issue features the winners, for poetry, Noel Pérez García and Abraham Fidel Ortiz Lugo, and for short fiction, Sarah Rubí Ortiz Rodríguez and Aquiles Sánchez Villaman.
In the last section, D. Alissa Trotz and Gabrielle J. Hosein discuss Gaiutra Bahadur’s Coolie Woman: The Odyssey of Indenture. This section includes a reflection by the author: “Conjure Women and Coolie Women.”
