Today, July 15, 2018, at 4:30pm, the Bajo El Sol Gallery presents an Artist Talk and Open Forum with the sculptors who created I Am Queen Mary are Virgin Islands artist La Vaughn Belle and Danish artist Jeannette Ehlers. [See previous post Caribbean Black Woman: A Rebel Queen.]
The artists created a new sculpture in Copenhagen—Denmark’s first public statue of a black woman—which shows Mary Thomas, who, with two other women, led the largest labor revolt in Danish colonial history (“Fireburn”) in Frederiksted, St. Croix.
The Bajo El Sol Gallery is located at Mongoose Junction, North Shore Road, Cruz Bay, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands.
