18th International Hemingway Conference: “Hemingway in Paris”

hem

The Hemingway Society is hosting the XVIII International Hemingway Conference—organized around the concept “Paris est une fête”. . . Hemingway’s Moveable Feast—at different locations in Paris, France, from July 22 to 28, 2018. The conference co-directors are H. R. Stoneback & Matthew Nickel; Paris site coordinators are Alice Mikal Craven and William E. Dow; and the host institution is The American University of Paris (AUP).

Although the conference focuses on “Hemingway in Paris,” this major conference includes many panels and presentations related to Hemingway in/and the Caribbean. Some examples are: a panel on The Old Man and the Sea and International Hemingway Part I and Part II, which include presentations such as “Hemingway’s Maps and Photos in Cuba as Background to ‘The Strange Country’” (Hideo Yanagisawa); “Broken Relationships and Broken Art: ‘The Strange Country’ Between Islands and Garden (Pamela Landers); and “Ernest Hemingway in Cuba” (Michael Connors).

Other paper titles that caught my eye (among the many fascinating topics) due to their Caribbean context are “Walcott Now: Hemingway’s Influence on the Late Derek Walcott (Molly J. Donehoo); Ernest Hemingway and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings in Bimini (Anna Lillios); and “And My Daiquiri in ‘El Floridita’: Fixing a Proper Hemingway Daiquiri (Joshua Briggs).
