CirCuba 2018

A broad representation from diverse geographical areas of the world, including over ten Latin America countries, will arrive in Cuba for one of the oldest and most notable circus festivals: CirCuba, which takes place in Havana from June 24 to June 29, and will continue touring throughout the country until its closing gala in Matanzas. Gael Suárez (Cubadebate) explains:

Circuba, a competitive event of the most legendary of the performing arts, is now in its 17th edition. This year, it is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the creation of the National Circus of Cuba [Circo Nacional de Cuba], an institution that has hosted over a thousand artists in five decades.

On the night of Sunday, June 24, starting at 8:30pm the curtains of the Trompoloco Tent (5th Avenue and 112 Street, Miramar, Playa) will open to make way for this celebration. The first function of the Festival will feature the stars of the award-winning Compañía Havana, a troupe that has recently achieved a successful tour in Italy; it will now propose a show that reflects the idiosyncrasy of Cuban circus artists, their mode of life, attitudes, commitment, and the difficulties of the profession. It is a different and attractive show in which its creator—Germán Muñoz Fuentes—fuses dance and circus performance in a pure contemporary style marked by urban character.

Then, from Monday, June 25, to Thursday, June 28, more than 30 acts will compete for the main prizes, which will be awarded by a prestigious jury on Friday, June 29 at 8:30pm. After the first stage of this great cultural event, the national tour will begin on July 4 in various provinces of the country, including Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Guantanamo, Holguín, Las Tunas, Camagüey, Ciego de Ávila, Villa Clara, Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus, Pinar del Río, and Matanzas. The Closing Gala will be on celebrated September 2, at 9:00pm at the Tropicana Matanzas Cabaret.
