Most of the articles listed below refer to Andrew Porwancher’s forthcoming book, The Jewish Founding Father: Alexander Hamilton’s Hidden Life (Harvard University Press, 2019). Alexander Hamilton was born in Nevis, and grew up in St. Croix (then a territory of Denmark and, now, of the U.S. Virgin Islands).

The premise is hardly surprising as Jewish families and their role in Caribbean development were prominent from the 16^th through the 19^th century. Alice Hoffman explored Camille Pissarro’s Jewish roots in The Marriage of Opposites (2015) a fictionalized account of his mother, Rachel Pomié, and grandfather, Moses Monsanto Pomié, and their family history on neighboring Danish colony St. Thomas. [See previous post Review of Alice Hoffman’s “The Marriage of Opposites/.]
