A report by Alessandro Mastroluca for Tennis World.
Monica Puig completed the unexpected. For the first time she won a match at WTA level after losing a set 6-0. The Puertorican came back to beat No.2 seed Caroline Wozniacki 0-6 6-4 6-4 and claim her fourth top 5 win in her career, the first since the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Wozniacki became increasingly frustrated for the crowd behaviour. Fans, mostly South American, were extremely vocal in their support for Puig, who beat Wozniacki for the first time on hard court and the second overall. Making her sixth appearance at Miami Open, Puig claimed her best result in the tournament.
Wozniacki, who hadn’t lost a match after serving a bagel since the 2017 WTA Finals, aimed to clinch her 550th WTA main draw win. More to come .
