We are very happy to hear that Bajo El Sol Gallery on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands is back and that owners Priscilla Hintz Rivera Knight and David Knight Jr. are busy helping in the process of healing from the battering of hurricanes on the islands. We also congratulate them for their 20-year legacy of support and engagement with the arts community of St. John and the greater Virgin Islands.
On Saturday, February 3, 2018, at 4:00pm the Gri Gri Project at Bajo El Sol will be hosting Danish filmmaker Helle Stenum who will be screening her 2017 documentary We Carry it Within Us (2017). The film investigates collective memory and different perspectives on the shared colonial past between Denmark and U.S .Virgin Islands.
Stenum’s film presents colonial histories through the memories, experiences and reflections of four Virgin Islanders (an artist, a student, a writer, and an anthropologist) as they engage art and cultural historians in Denmark. The resulting dialogues examine Denmark’s role in the transatlantic slave trade and question how colonial history is leaving its mark on today’s media, art, museums, education and wealth distribution, as well as in various ways of remembering and forgetting.
Stenum is also a researcher and educator working on issues including migration, collective memory, ethnic relations, transnational connections, and race and gender.
