With his short story, “Nómadas” [Nomads], Cuban writer Antonio Carballo won the first prize in the XII International City of Pupiales Short Story for 2017 [XII Concurso Internacional de Cuento Ciudad de Pupiales 2017], which is sponsored by the Gabriel García Márquez Foundation in Colombia. After evaluating the 2 134 works sent to the organization from 34 countries, the jury announced the winner on December 15.
Antonio Carballo has obtained more than ten international awards, but the City of Pupiales Award is his first recognition in Latin America.
The Gabriel García Márquez Foundation highlighted the high quality of the stories submitted to the contest and exhorted all writers interested to participate in the XIII literary event, which will be convened in 2018.
